This Earth Day, April 22nd, Zeus is calling for a multi-pronged attack on environmental challenges: protecting biodiversity, tackling plastic pollution, and urging all producers to join the global movement for change.

We understand the simple truth that, a thriving environment is the foundation for a healthy future. There can be no economic or societal well-being on a sick planet.

That’s why, as part of our ongoing sustainability efforts, Zeus is committed to supporting biodiversity projects. We’re seeking partnerships, both local and international, to make a positive impact.

Biodiversity in Crisis

The planet faces a biodiversity crisis, these are some of our main concerns and ones which we have some power to address:

  • Habitat Loss: Deforestation, land-use changes, and unsustainable practices are destroying natural habitats at an alarming rate. Did you know? The planet is losing a staggering 10 million hectares of forests every year – an area larger than Iceland. This disrupts the delicate balance of nature.
  • Pollution: From chemical run-off to plastic waste, pollution disrupts ecological processes, putting countless species at risk.
  • Climate Change: Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, and ocean acidification are having a devastating impact on wildlife populations.

At Zeus we know that biodiversity isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Healthy ecosystems provide us with clean air, water, and food security. They also help to regulate climate and protect us from diseases. Unfortunately, it is estimated that around one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction.

We aren’t going at it alone.

Zeus is actively working with suppliers and manufacturers who share our commitment to protecting biodiversity. As part of our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Scope 3, we will work to help our suppliers reduce their environmental impact. This includes minimising their contribution to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change – all factors that threaten biodiversity.

By supporting biodiversity projects, promoting sustainable practices throughout our supply chain, and raising awareness, we aim to:

  • Protect endangered species: This includes habitat restoration, anti-poaching initiatives, and captive breeding programs.
  • Promote sustainable practices: We’ll support efforts like regenerative agriculture and responsible land management that work in harmony with nature.
  • Raise awareness: Educating ourselves and others about the importance of protecting biodiversity is crucial to building a sustainable future.

Join Us in Beating the Plastic Habit

While protecting biodiversity is a long-term effort, we can all take immediate action to reduce plastic pollution. This Earth Day, we challenge you to take the Plastic-Free Challenge for a few weeks.

Try to eliminate single-use plastics from your daily routine. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Ditch the bottled water: Invest in a reusable water bottle and fill it up at home or work.
  • Pack your lunch plastic-free: Use containers and utensils made from sustainable materials like stainless steel or bamboo. Wrap sandwiches in reusable beeswax wraps or cloth napkins.
  • Beware of hidden plastics: Processed foods often come wrapped in unnecessary plastic. Look for alternatives with minimal packaging or buy in bulk from stores that allow you to use your own containers. Consider options like buying fresh produce instead of pre-cut and pre-washed.
  • Embrace reusables: Invest in reusable coffee cups, straws, and shopping bags. Many stores offer discounts for using your own bags.
  • Get creative with storage: Use glass jars or stainless-steel containers to store leftovers and dry goods instead of plastic wrap or bags.
  • Think beyond the kitchen: Look for plastic alternatives in your bathroom routine. Consider bar soap instead of body wash in plastic bottles, or refillable shampoo and conditioner containers.

You might be surprised just how much plastic infiltrates your daily life. But don’t get discouraged! This challenge is about awareness, not perfection.

A Call to Action for All Producers: Join the Earth Day Pledge

We believe real change requires collective action. That’s why we’re urging all producers to join us in signing the Earth Day pledge. This pledge outlines concrete steps towards a more sustainable future, including significant reductions in plastic production.

Declan Breen, our Head of Sustainability, says to our customers: “At Zeus, we’re committed to helping our customers make sustainable choices. We recognise the impact of plastics on the environment, and that’s why we offer a wide range of eco-friendly alternatives. From compostable food containers to tree-free paper products, we can help you find the perfect plastic-free solution for your business needs.

Together, we can make a positive difference for the planet.

Let’s celebrate Earth Day by taking action for a healthier planet. Support biodiversity projects, reduce your plastic footprint, inspire others to do the same, and hold producers accountable for a sustainable future.

A healthier planet starts with each one of us”
