Taking the First Step
After discussing the need to undertake a positive action for some time, Nick McKuhen, Managing Director, Michael Owens, Head of Sales, and Mark Davies, Warehouse Operative, from Smith Bateson finally took the plunge by completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. They hope this achievement will be the first of many challenges that unite them for a greater cause.
Memorable Moments on the Peaks
Completing the challenge in just 8 hours was a remarkable achievement, but the journey was filled with unforgettable moments. Looking back at the first peak from the second, the team was struck by how far they had already come and how much further they still had to go. Mark’s disappointment when he realized the burger van at the halfway point was a myth was both a humorous and poignant moment. They also underestimated the difficulty of the third peak—it was anything but easy. Navigating through thick fog and rain, they nearly took a wrong turn down the third peak, only to be saved by a fellow walker’s incorrect directions. However, the well-earned drink at the end made it all worthwhile.
Support from the Community
The response from colleagues, friends, and family regarding their fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK has been overwhelmingly positive. Seeing the support from everyone, including family, friends, customers, and suppliers, was truly heartwarming and motivating.
Overcoming Challenges
The descent of the second peak was particularly challenging, with their joints screaming in protest. Ibuprofen became their best friend, and Mark, perhaps tired of their complaints, sped ahead. Despite these difficulties, they kept each other going with encouragement and humour.
Reflections on Charity and Community Involvement
This experience has reinforced the importance of charity work and community support. They are now more motivated than ever to organise further challenges, potentially involving the entire Zeus Group. Utilising their network to create positive impacts should be a continuous goal.
Completing the Challenge
Finishing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in just 8 hours was a proud moment for all of them. Although walking for over 8 hours was tougher than they had imagined, their fitness and determination saw them through. They have immense respect for anyone who completes it faster.
Camaraderie and Teamwork
Throughout the walk, they supported each other and maintained a positive mindset. Each of them had moments where they needed to dig deep to continue, and Mark’s motivational mantra, “Get your shovel out lads!” helped them stay on track.
Training and Preparation
Mark trained diligently by walking long distances regularly, while Michael and Nick, unfortunately, did not prepare as well. This lack of preparation took its toll after about 5 hours of walking.
Continuing Support for Their Cause
Their fundraising page is still open, and they encourage everyone to continue supporting their efforts. They hope their challenge inspires others within the Zeus Group to take on their own charitable initiatives.
Advice for Future Challengers
To other companies or individuals considering a similar challenge for charity, their advice is simple: commit, publicise, raise money, and then complete it. Don’t overthink—just do it.
Supporting Cancer Research UK
Through this challenge, they hope to convey the importance of supporting Cancer Research UK. Every contribution, no matter how small, is valuable. Cancer Research reached out to thank them, demonstrating that all support is appreciated.
Personal Motivation
Participating in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge was their way of showing support for those affected by cancer. Many of them have family, friends, and colleagues fighting this disease, and sometimes the best way to help is by showing solidarity through initiatives like this.
By coming together, they haven’t only accomplished a significant physical feat but also made a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer. They look forward to more challenges and continuing their support for Cancer Research UK. You can donate to this worthy cause on their JustGiving donation page.
